Reduction of chemical networks II. Analysis of the fractional ionisation in protoplanetary discs
نویسنده
چکیده
We analyse the evolution of the fractional ionisation in a steady-state protoplanetary disc over 10 yr. We consider a disc model with a vertical temperature gradient and with gas-grain chemistry including surface reactions. The ionisation due to stellar X-rays, stellar and interstellar UV radiation, cosmic rays and radionuclide decay is taken into account. Using our reduction schemes as a tool for the analysis, we isolate small sets of chemical reactions that reproduce the evolution of the ionisation degree at representative disc locations with an accuracy of 50%–100%. On the basis of fractional ionisation, the disc can be divided into three distinct layers. In the dark dense midplane the ionisation degree is sustained by cosmic rays and radionuclides only and is very low, < ∼ 10. This region corresponds to the so-called “dead zone” in terms of the angular momentum transport driven by MHD turbulence. The ionisation degree can be accurately reproduced by chemical networks with about 10 species and a similar number of reactions. In the intermediate layer the chemistry of the fractional ionisation is driven mainly by the attenuated stellar X-rays and is far more complicated. For the first time, we argue that surface hydrogenation of long carbon chains can be of crucial importance for the evolution of the ionisation degree in protoplanetary discs. In the intermediate layer reduced networks contain more than a 100 species and hundreds of reactions. Finally, in the unshielded low-density surface layer of the disc the chemical life cycle of the ionisation degree comprises a restricted set of photoionisation-recombination processes. It is sufficient to keep about 20 species and reactions in reduced networks. Furthermore, column densities of key molecules are calculated and compared to the results of other recent studies and observational data. The relevance of our results to the MHD modelling of protoplanetary discs is discussed.

On the Ionisation Fraction in Protoplanetary Disks I: Comparing Different Reaction Networks
We calculate the ionisation fraction in protostellar disk models using a number of different chemical reaction networks, including gas–phase and gas–grain reaction schemes. The disk models we consider are conventional α–disks, which include viscous heating and radiative cooling. The primary source of ionisation is assumed to be X–ray irradiation from the central star. For most calculations we a...

We calculate the ionisation fraction in protostellar disk models using two different gas–phase chemical networks, and examine the effect of turbulent mixing by modelling the diffusion of chemical species vertically through the disk. The aim is to determine in which regions of the disk gas can couple to a magnetic field and sustain MHD turbulence. The disk models are conventional α–disks, and th...
متن کاملTurbulent transport and its effect on the dead zone in protoplanetary discs
Context. Protostellar accretion discs have cool, dense midplanes where externally originating ionisation sources such as X–rays or cosmic rays are unable to penetrate. This suggests that for a wide range of radii, MHD turbulence can only be sustained in the surface layers where the ionisation fraction is sufficiently high. A dead zone is expected to exist near the midplane, such that active acc...
متن کاملOn the ionisation fraction in protoplanetary disks III. The effect of X–ray flares on gas-phase chemistry
Context. Recent observations of the X–ray emission from T Tauri stars in the Orion nebula have shown that they undergo frequent outbursts in their X–ray luminosity. These X–ray flares are characterised by increases in luminosity by two orders of magnitude, a typical duration of less than one day, and a significant hardening of the X–ray spectrum. Aims. It is unknown what effect these X–ray flar...
متن کاملReduction of chemical networks I . The case of molecular clouds
We present a new method to analyse and reduce chemical networks and apply this technique to the chemistry in molecular clouds. Using the technique, we investigated the possibility of reducing the number of chemical reactions and species in the UMIST 95 database simultaneously. In addition, we did the same reduction but with the " objective technique " in order to compare both methods. We found ...
